Coronavirus in Illinois updates: 5,059 new COVID-19 cases and 79 additional deaths reported as suburban Cook County opens online vaccine registration
Chicago Teachers Union members who are refusing to return to the classroom said Monday they’re worried about losing their jobs but they believe that reopening schools is a greater risk.
Torres and other union members spoke at a news conference early Monday, a day after the union announced that some of its members would not report to work on Monday because they don’t trust that CPS’s reopening plan is safe and equitable.
Meanwhile, Illinois health officials on Monday announced 5,059 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 79 additional fatalities, bringing the total number of known infections in Illinois to 984,880 and the statewide death toll to 16,834 since the start of the pandemic.
Additionally, the Cook County Department of Public Health is now inviting people to register online to receive information about when and where they may be able to receive COVID-19 vaccines.

12:04 p.m.: 5,059 new confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases and 79 additional deaths reported
Illinois health officials on Monday announced 5,059 new confirmed and probable cases of COVID-19 and 79 additional fatalities, bringing the total number of known infections in Illinois to 984,880 and the statewide death toll to 16,834 since the start of the pandemic.
Officials also reported 48,254 new tests in the last 24 hours. The seven-day statewide rolling positivity rate for cases as a share of total tests was 8.6% for the period ending Sunday.

10:40 a.m.: Suburban Cook County opens online vaccine registration
The Cook County Department of Public Health is now inviting people to register online to receive information about when and where they may be able to receive COVID-19 vaccines.
People who fill out the form will receive regular updates about vaccine availability. The health department serves about 2.5 million residents of suburban Cook County, except in Evanston, Oak Park, Skokie and Stickney Township, which have their own health departments.
Cook County is planning to provide “some direct vaccinations,” but most will be administered by hospitals, other health care facilities and pharmacies, according to the department’s website.

8:36 a.m.: Chicago Teachers Union members staying home say they fear for their jobs but ‘fear of this virus is greater’
Chicago Teachers Union members who are refusing to return to the classroom said Monday they’re worried about losing their jobs but they believe that reopening schools is a greater risk.
”We’re afraid for our lives. We don’t want to lose our jobs. The fear of losing our jobs is real. Many of us are the sole income earners in our homes,” Chicago Public Schools teacher Lori Torres said. “But the fear of this virus is greater than that fear.”

About 5,800 teachers and other staff members who serve preschoolers and some special education students were expected to return to classrooms on Monday, with those students due to return on Jan. 11, which would mark the first in-person classes in CPS since the coronavirus prompted a statewide shutdown of schools in March.

6 a.m.: COVID-19 vaccines move back-to-the-office plans closer to reality. Here are some key challenges for 2021.
COVID-19 vaccines are only a first step toward a return to the office, but it gives downtown employers something that’s been missing since March: a sense of urgency.
“I think the vaccine is a game-changer because it gives light at the end of the tunnel, and workers can talk about returning to the office as if it’s a real thing,” said Bridget Gainer, vice president of global affairs at Aon, which is leading a coalition of large employers in Chicago and other cities throughout the world to plan for the future of offices.
“Plans can start moving from theoretical to practical,” she said.
Vaccinations bring hope, but employers are grappling with how they’ll need to change in a post-pandemic business world, with no precedent to guide them.
Companies will spend the coming months deciding which traditions to hang on to, and which innovations hatched during the pandemic should stick around. Office layouts, work-from-home policies, travel budgets, recruiting and employee retention efforts could be affected.

5 a.m.: Eli Lilly, other big pharma firms are making it harder for low-income patients to get discount drugs under federal program, doctors say
Family medicine doctor Arielle Hirschfeld recently saw a patient come in for a refill of a blood pressure drug. Her blood pressure was concerningly high, and she hadn’t taken medication for it in three months.
During the pandemic, Hirschfield said, the woman and her husband lost their custodial jobs, and she was afraid she wouldn’t be able to afford the medicine. But Hirschfeld told her she could get it through a federal discount prescription program, called 340B
“She looked visibly relieved,” Hirschfeld said.
The woman’s plight is one Hirschfeld often hears about working at a Chicago-area clinic that serves low-income people.
Many of her patients rely on the 340B program, which provides drug discounts to safety-net clinics and hospitals, like Hirschfeld’s employer, Erie Family Health Centers, so they can offer affordable medication to their patients. The clinics purchase the discounted drugs and distribute them through pharmacies like Walgreens, so patients can get refills near home.

5 a.m.: St. Clair County hits another record of patients hospitalized with COVID-19
St. Clair County reported 125 patients hospitalized for COVID-19 on Sunday, a record number. It’s the highest number of hospitalizations since Dec. 20 when the county reported 119 patients. The hospitals include Memorial Hospital Belleville, Memorial Hospital East in Shiloh, HSHS St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon and Touchette Regional Hospital in Centreville.
Two days ago, the county set a new record for COVID-19 cases in a single day with 306 cases reported on New Year’s Day.
“As we said, the high positivity rates, they’re a leading indicator that really showed us that this was going to happen, so that’s why it’s important we get those positivity rates down to make sure that the hospitals don’t fill up to a point where patients can’t be handled,” Board Chairman Mark Kern said during St. Clair County Emergency Management Agency’s daily coronavirus livestream on Sunday.
On Sunday, the county reported a daily positivity rate of 15.5%, down from 15.6% on Saturday. Additionally, the county’s seven-day rolling average was 14.1%, down from 14.6% on Saturday. Kern said the slight decrease isn’t indicative of a step in the right direction in containing coronavirus.
“Being down is really no consolation,” Kern said. “These numbers are just way too high.”
The positivity rate for the metro east saw a slight increase on Sunday. The daily positivity rate increased to 13.1%, up from 12.6% on Saturday, and the seven-day rolling average positivity rate increased to 13%, up from 12.8% on Saturday.
The state implemented Tier 3 coronavirus restrictions for all regions on on Nov. 20. The third tier tightens restrictions on indoor dining, bars and social gatherings while adding restrictions to casinos, retailers, video gaming and museums.
