It’s so important to talk about this. Some people don’t even realize how it could be offending, but that’s the issue, and this can only improve if we, as individuals—both men and women, speak up to raise awareness around this. I’ve worked as a developer for the last year, and would cringe each time a senior colleague would praise me with a “good girl”. Would anyone say “good boy” to someone?
Both times it happened, the colleagues in question’s native language wasn’t English, so I made sure to explain that I didn’t really appreciate that, even if it wasn’t meant to be offensive.
