Artificial intelligence is a machine or computer software that can think and learn on its self like humans.

The birth of AI

H.G Wells

Its history dates back to the 19th century. H.G Wells, a science-fiction author of the 1890s, mentions robotics and human-like, imaginative machines. Then, if we look at the 20th century, we see a mechanical man named ‘Tin Man’ in the 1939 American musical fantasy film “Wizard of Oz”.

Making it a reality

Alan Turing

However, the concept of AI was limited to science fiction until the 1950s but changed during the 1950s. Alan Turing, an English mathematician (during World War II he broke the enigma code of the German army, shortened the war by two years, and saved about 14 million lives) who published the article about “Computer Machinery and Intelligence”. There he was shown how to design and test intelligent machines.

Six years later, in 1956, researchers unveiled the first application software using AI technology at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (DSRPAI) at Dartmouth College, New Hampshire. It was organized by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky.

Winter of AI

After that, AI technology continued to flourish until the 1970s, but the post — 70s was a dark age for AI. Computers at the time did not have the ability to execute AI programs, nor did they have the ability to store data to implement AI technology. So much of the research that was being done on AI failed, and so the investors who had invested in it got that money back.

Rise of Artificial Intelligence

But the 90s were a time when many goals in AI were achieved. In 1997, International Business Machinery Corporation (IBM) defeated then-chess world champion Gary Kasparov in a computer software called Deep Blue. In the same year, speech recognition software improved by Dragon System was installed on Windows. Around the same time, the world’s first humanoid Robot “Kismet” was developed by Cynthia Breazeal. These new Inventions can be pointed out as major turning points in the field of AI.

Now AI is Everywhere

Today, artificial intelligence is a part of our lives. It is widely used in sectors such as Health care, Agriculture, and Finance. AI is also very much integrated into the daily life of man. Examples include digital assistants such as Siri and Alexa, as well as self-driving vehicles. It also uses AI for search engines like Google that we use in our daily lives, as well as for social media networks like Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter.

Siri

There is a lot of talk about AI today. This is because powerful companies like Tesla are investing heavily in AI. Therefore, in the near future, there will be innovations that will change the world using AI.
