O’Reilly, You’re Missing the Point
Dear Mr. O’Reilly,
On Monday, First Lady Michelle Obama gave a powerful, moving speech. She shared a powerful image of how her girls now play with their dogs on the lawn of a house built by slaves. On your show, you responded by saying those slaves were “well fed and had decent lodgings provided by the government.”
You’re missing the point.
I’m not saying your facts are wrong. You’re just missing the point Mrs. Obama was conveying. Along the way, you are misguiding your viewers. So I want to make some things clear.
Mrs. Obama does not want or need your pity over the living conditions of slaves. It makes no difference whether the slaves ate fine caviar or sandy gruel. It makes no difference whether they slept in gilded mansions or dirty shacks. These details simply do not matter.
Slavery is inhumane regardless of how you may try to paint it. It does not matter which details you cherry-pick and which you omit. You see, slavery is inhumane by definition. Slavery literally reduced people to property. If that isn’t inhumane then I don’t know what is.
Humane slavery is an oxymoron. Stop trying to revise history and make it seem like slavery can be humane. You weren’t explicitly saying the slaves were treated humanely but we all know what you were implying.
So please, just stop.
