Travel Treasures: Japan

Four years ago, I took part in a JICA training on economic administration in Tokushima Prefecture, Japan. The whole experience brought lots of learning and discoveries but there are two trips which I am still very fond of reminiscing.

Amidst the long travel, I find two organizations to be the most awe-inspiring. Irodori Co., Ltd. headed by its President, Mr. Tomoji Yokoishi offers the “world’s most fun job”, as stated by its very motivated elderly workers. Where else can you find 80 years old(and older) grannies who climb trees or use tablet PCs? Just by selling leaves, Yokoishi-san transformed a rural community into an amazing enterprise haven. Another impressive maverick is Mr. Shinya Ominami, the force behind Kamiyama’s Green Valley- Japan’s version of Silicon Valley. Mr. Yokoishi and Mr. Ominami exhibit the ultimate portrait of Japanese Samurais- unparalleled courage against opposition, loyalty to their visions and unyielding power to protect their sense of honor.
