Food Allergy Blood Test and Skin Test — Smart ways to detect a Food Allergy
We hear a lot of people claiming their allergy to many particular foods, like corn, milk and milk products, peanuts, etc. They state that whenever they eat a food that they are allergic to, intentionally or unintentionally, they either get rashes on the body, or suffer from an upset system, or likewise a situation that makes them feel sick. But why does this happen?
Food allergy is an immune system generated problem wherein the immune system identifies a particular food as a foreign substance that may cause harm to the body and commands an attack against it. It releases antibodies that give rise to symptoms which indicate us of a problem. A food allergy blood test helps in understanding which particular food is causing the allergic reactions.
Symptoms of Food Allergy

Food Allergy Test
When a physician suspects a food allergy, he/she firstly studies the symptoms, conducts a thorough analysis of whether the patient has a family history of allergies and then recommends a series of tests depending upon his/her observations.
There are typically two types food allergy tests ordered by physicians — a skin test, and a blood test. An elimination test is another kind that adopted in case the above mentioned two tests are either not possible or reveal no concrete result.
Food Allergy Skin Test: In a skin test, a lab technician places a small amount of a suspected food substance on the forearm or back. He/she then pricks the skin with the help of a needle and allows the substance to touch the bare skin surface beneath.
If the patient develops a bump on the tested skin, it means he/she is allergic to that particular food. The opposite applies in the case of no allergy.
Food Allergy Blood Test: Here, a sample of blood is drawn and studied under a microscope, to look for the presence of an allergy-related antibody known as immunoglobulin E (IgE). If the antibody is present in the blood, it means the patient is allergic to a particular food. If not, then the symptoms may indicate some other disease similar to a food allergy.
