Twitter is one of the most used social networks in today’s society. It is known for its speed, getting your message across simply and easily, and how instant someone can reply. With only a maximum of 140 character allowed, Twitter is able to get messages across very fast and news is capable of spreading that fast as well. However, with any social media, there are both pros and cons. Twitter’s instant speed can also mean having a thousand people inputting their two cents all at the same. With so many replies, it can be overwhelming. Even James Comey, the former FBI Director, mentioned that the app is both “wonderful” and “depressing.” Comey compared Twitter responses to a dive bar in America where he can hear everyone “screaming at the television set.” And it’s true. Twitter is wonderful because it’s instant, news generates so rapidly, and it’s shortly written to get audience attention. Yet, it can also be too much at once with how fast anyone can reply and a community can generate. Twitter even has hashtags that can easily track topics being talked about within users.

With that said, a business using social media has to be very strategic and careful about what they post. They have to think about what to write in 140 characters or less that will catch people’s attention and make sure that their tweets won’t bring back lash to the company. Businesses might also track hashtags to see what people are saying about their company and take that into consideration. However, it can be overpowering too because of how many replies you get and there’s so many people talking about your company that you don’t know where to begin. Businesses can use social media to their advantage, but they have to be strategic about it and know how to approach their audience.
