Mirroring Works!

In a job interview, your words and body language must send the right message. To build instant rapport with your interviewer, try mirroring.

Mirroring is an interview technique where you reflect your interviewer. Mirroring is not mimicking, it is adapting to the body language of your interviewer rather than copying them exactly. This method is used to establish coherence between you and your interviewer.

Using this technique this can build a better connection where the interviewer feels more relaxed in conversing with you.

However, be careful. There is a thin line between effective and ineffective mirroring during a job interview.

What is Mirroring?

We use mirroring unconsciously when we talk with someone we know well or feel comfortable with, such as family and friends.

Using this technique when done right, could help you ace a job interview. Gaining your interviewer trust can reduce nervousness during the interview.

Mirroring is done by subtly reflecting your interviewer. You must adjust your mood, posture, tone and actions according to that of your interviewer. This may also include word usage or language that is being used by your interviewer.

For example, when your interviewer speaks softly when asking interview questions, try to respond in the same tone. When they sit up straight and lean forward, observe carefully, wait for a minute or two before doing the same.

Using this technique will allow you to convey the message to your interviewer that you are on the same page and that you understand them. People tend to feel relaxed in the presence of something known or familiar to them.

But try not to copycat or shadow your interviewer exactly because this will come across as creepy. Be more of an echo of their body language.

When is Mirroring Effective?

When trying this skill, remember to mirror positive dispositions only. If your interviewer seemed angry or irritated, do not reflect those actions. If you do you will lose trust quickly.

Instead be positive and amicable to lighten the mood and they will mostly mirror you.

Mirroring is not always plausible so use it wisely. Continuous and obvious mimicry will seem awkward for the person being mirrored.

What to avoid when using Mirroring

Don’t be too conscious. Be as natural as possible. Since mirroring is done subconsciously in human interactions just add a little intent to supercharge your interactions.

Do not exaggerate. Do not copy everything that your interviewer does. Choose relevant and occasional gestures that will boost your interviewer’s mood. Avoid mimicking frequent mannerisms.

Do not annoy or offend your interviewers. Try not to convey negative messages towards your interviewer. Using incorrect mirroring could make you appear as if you are mocking. Let natural conversation flow between you and your interviewer.

Do not be distracted. Stay focused at all times. Do not using the technique distract you from expressing your true self during the interview. Do not pressure yourself to mirror every movement.

Do not use when unsure. If you haven’t tried this technique before, it is best to not try it in a formal setting right away. Rehearse with a friend or someone you know. Do not try to be experimental during the interview itself.

Mirroring can give you a distinct advantage during your interview. Practice this skill, master it and try it out to ace your next job interview.
