A Kid’s Poem
I used to write a lot of children’s poetry. Here’s a piece.
Point of View
What if fish had feet instead of their fins
And clowns had frowns instead of their grins
And trees wore shorts on top of their trunks
And the most pleasant smells came from the skunks?
What if snails were as big as small whales
And monkeys had hands at the ends of their tails?
What if camels had humps under their bellies
And everyone ate broccoli on top of their jelly?
What if everything you know as true
Was completely different, including you?
What if you had twenty-seven fingers and only one toe
And when the lights went out your lone toe would glow?
It might just sound like a mixed up place
That you’ll only find in the farthest of space
But you have to imagine a kid over there
Who could be covered in bright blue hair
Where he’s sitting and reading a poem like this
About things he never thought could exist
Like having ten toes that surely didn’t glow
And having only ten fingers to wave hello
And eating peanut better on top of his jelly
And camels with humps on their backs instead of their bellies
And what if he laughed at a plain monkey tail
And what if he chuckled at the thought of small snails
Imagine him reading about smelly old skunks
Or laughing at the thought of naked tree trunks
I’m sure his clowns have frowns where ours have grins
And he surely can’t imagine his fish having fins
What might sound really strange and weird
Just depends on your point of view
So be careful not to judge too soon
Because someone else could be judging you.
If you liked that here’s a link to a children’s book I publish a few years ago. It’s cute. I read it to myself every night. http://www.bigtentbooks.com/theoldmanandthecatbylancesmith.aspx
