What the New CBA needs
My name is Lance Cameron. I am a senior at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. I have come to love my college, and the building that hosts all of my classes, and most of my nights. But I have also seen some things that have been changing, some good, and some bad.
The new CBA building is going to be huge. $84 million huge. With that being said, I think there should be some solid programs that should be implemented, not just because of the location, but because of the symbol it will hold on campus, and hopefully throughout the country.
The business college functions on a slogan, “Start Something.” This is a bold statement that should be lived up to. Couple things the college is lacking, are big passions of mine, and I’m sure other business students as well. We have these ideas that we think of, but no direction in regards of how to get to the next step. There’s been an introduction of the entrepreneurship program and the various classes offered to the rest of the college, that somewhat hits this problem. But there’s a growing trend in technology that business students want to take advantage of, but not enough knowledge or experience to help them get to where they want to go. I think there should be a joint program for people interested in innovation. With the building of innovation campus, and the new location of the business college across from the Raikes program (computer science), why not start a program that teaches young professionals how to collaborate on projects, or businesses with people from different fields, and maybe start a business before they even graduate?
These joint programs should be teaching the interested students code. No matter what the major is, or their career goals, the interested students should be learning the languages of the technology industry. The program I am imagining is a giant year long workshop, where the students with the ideas can approach the students that are learning what the other is lacking, and letting them team up to work on projects together. There is a saying that the Enstitute Program goes by, learn by doing, that really should be in all colleges. Why do you have to take a test to show you have been learning? Why can’t it be a real life problem, that can be solved in a “classroom” that earns students degrees in what they are really passionate for. Imagine a Information Technology Management degree, and working for one of the biggest startups in the country? That can happen, if changes can be made.
I am not just saying this because I am interested in Tech. What if someone wants to create a way for blind people to see? Granted it is a far fetched idea, but there is probably a passionate student out there looking for a science major that is working on a program somewhat related to the problem he wants solved. This can be anywhere from farming problems, to medical problems, but all of these things can be attempted to be solved. Grading a test score that says, “Hey, you showed us you know the proper way to audit a company’s financial statement.” Or do you want a grade that says “These young students have been working on a way to help poor countries recycle more efficiently, and use the recycled material to build housing for those in need?” I like the second option better.
Actually being able to learn things that help you “Start something” is a first step in making CBA a name to be reckoned with. The second, is actually following through with the program, and creating things that leave an outside impact, rather than another scantron answer sheet. This is a rough draft of some of my ideas, and I think it is worth a look at, and something to think about. If you truly want to help bring this college to a prestigious standard, there needs to be some innovative leaps of faith in progressing the way we learn. You can only remember so many things for a test. But you will never forget the first software as a service you created that is tangible and of value to the general public.
