Will We Reach The Space Age In The Near Future?

Homo Sapiens have been alive for a fraction of a fraction of the age of the universe. We’re around 200,000 years old. Descended from 4.8 billion year old organisms on a 6 billion year old planet, as part of a 13+ billion year old universe. The time scale of this thing we inhabit is enormous and we’re but a minute piece of it.

It was only in the last 10,000 years we developed and refined agriculture. Only in the last few hundred years we developed mass production and only in the last decades space travel has even been conceivable let alone something we routinely do now (counting the ISS).

From that perspective we’re mere moments from bursting forward into the solar system and beyond. We’ve been incubated in one form or another on this planet for billions of years and FINALLY life is escaping. This is a wonderful time to be alive — and it’s only getting more exciting!

However when we break that timeline down to human lifetimes of around 80 years. Things start to look a bit farther away. In the almost 50 years since Apollo, we haven’t reached that many new milestones. SpaceLab and the ISS are huge, but technologically they aren’t so far beyond what already existed. SpaceX landing a reflown rocket was HUGE. But we may not feel any significant reverberations from that for some time. There’s momentum right now in space travel and that could lead to significant increases in output. Coupled with advances in robotics and artifical intelligence and its possible we’ll soon begin to advance faster than we ever thought possible.

As Tim Urban puts it, we could be here;

But feeling like we’re here;

From that perspective, all we can do is individually do our best to advance space travel and hope that collectively all our efforts lead to the top image becoming reality.
