Christian Legal Society

Day 59

So today was another “topical” discussion. You can see Day 58's post to get my fealing on these. Anyway, Blackaby discussed a topic that has really been on my heart a lot this year — Being a Christian at work.

Blackaby discussed the normal array of having a God first approach at work, but I really liked one thing that he said:

I believe churches ought to have commissioning services for those who go into the marketplace every Monday morning in the same way we pray over missionaries who travel to other countries to share the Gospel.

This dovetails nicely into a comment we discussed a couple weeks ago in Bible class. What if we treated our jobs like we were vocational missionaries? What if we went into our jobs every morning to be the best Christian we could be instead of the best _____. My proposition is that if we truly thought that way, we very well could get fired, but we also might bring some people to God. Which is more important: your job, or someone’s eternal salvation? And considering where we live, it is unlikely that you would even lose your job.

So that leads me to the Christian Legal Society. Almost 18 months ago, I saw a listing for a Christian Legal Society lunch on a calendar I subscribe too. I had participated in the CLS during law school, so I was excited to see the Houston Chapter of CLS back up and running. I attended a couple sessions and quickly volunteered.

Because the group had just recently gotten back together, there were plenty of areas for me to help. Shortly there after, I found myself as the treasurer of the Houston CLS. Now this makes sense, since the position of Treasurer is the job that just about no one wants, but none the less, I was honored to be on the leadership team.

Now I have been a part of a lot of groups associated with the legal profession, but I have never been a part of a group quite like the Houston CLS. It is nice to have a place that you feel like you belong.

This year I was even allowed to bring a CLS monthly meeting to my firm. That allowed me to start a conversation with many of my coworkers and even the boss himself. I had 4 coworkers attend and hear the good news.

Additionally, this year I invited my boss and his wife to attend the Christian Legal Society banquet with me. It was great communing with them in a format that truly put Christ first.

So all that to say, I agree with Blackaby. I believe that those of us who have jobs in the marketplace are to act as if we are vocational missionaries. Put Christ first and our jobs second. And I thank God for sending me the Christian Legal Society.
