With a title like “the Holy Spirit,” I think I am setting this post up to be a let down. Because frankly, I don’t know a lot about the Holy Spirit.
- It (He?)came on the disciples at Pentecost
- It lives in us
- It is a part of the Trinity
- It is also refereed to as the Holy Ghost, which is kind-of cool
- It can help you pray when we don’t have words
- It helps us discern scripture
And there you have it. That’s about all I got. If I spent the time, I could probably come up with a few more, but I think you get the picture. I have the church answers.
The last two days in the Experiencing God study, we have talked a lot about the Holy Spirit, and for some reason, something just clicked.
The disciples would have been foolish to say, “It’s wonderful knowing You, Jesus; but we would really like to know the Father.” When Philip said, “Lord, show us the Father and that will be enough for us” (John 14:8), Jesus responded, “Don’y you know me, Philip, even after I have been among you such a long time? Anyone who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? Don’t you believe that I am in the Father, and that the Father is in me? The words I say to you are not just my own. Rather, it is the Father, living in me, who is doing his work” (John 14:9–10). When Jesus spoke, the Father was speaking through Him. When Jesus did a miracle, the Father was doing His work through Jesus.
Similarly, I overlook the Holy Spirit in favor of God.
We fail to realize that an encounter with the Holy Spirit, who lives within us, is an encounter with God…. God’s Spirit lives in you (1 Cor. 3:16)
I have no great tips. I have nothing concrete to give. But today, and moving forward, I am going to try to think of the Holy Spirit more reverantly than I have in the past.
The Holy Spirit is how God (who is the Holy Spirit… still working this out) talks to his people. Accordingly, I guess I should not find it surprising when I do not “hear from God” since the vast majority of my life I have almost ignored the Holy Spirit entirely.
So here we go. Bring on the Holy Spirit. I welcome you to invade my space.
