Perhaps the most surprising reason is that Chicago Public Schools doesn’t fund curriculum very well. This was something that surprised me when I heard it on an interview today. Some teachers in Chicago are forced to buy their own curriculum. Can you imagine that in other jobs? In what other jobs do employees have to throw hundreds of their own dollars into the job? I can’t think of any, though I’m sure they exist. They also spend money on their students in a variety of other ways, even feeding and clothing them. That’s also money.
