I agree with all of this. But “education” can also mean “exposure” in a guided setting — exposure to different cultures and perspectives. Skills aside, simply exposing kids to the different ways in which people experience the world fosters empathy and understanding. Those kids will then grow up being more open minded and tolerant adults. I guess in schools, that would take placing an emphasis on anthropological and arts education which, as we know, aren’t too highly valued nowadays. Aside from nonprofits and individual teachers introducing that into the classroom, we will probably unfortunately have to see our values as a society shift before we see that reflected in education. Judging by our current state of affairs, seems like now might be a good time.
