re: Position of the author
A proportional electoral college does not preserve the original purpose of the college, which was specifically to avoid direct, proportional democracy and, as with the Senate but less so, to give disproportional influence to larger states. In any event, it would require a constitutional amendment to be of any real force, so what’s the point?
Position of the comment author: The electoral college, as it is currently constituted, serves many legitimate purposes. It forces candidates to form broad, geographic constituencies rather than just running up the votes in densely-populated areas. Without an electoral college no candidate would pay any attention to large swaths of the country.
