Absolutely, let’s do the Christian thing, let the church do what it’s been doing for centuries, taking care of the poor and indigent. This is a societal problem, not a government problem.
“But I don’t want to beg the church for help”. But it’s A OK to ask the government? Why? because the church may ask you to chop some wood for the widow Smith?
There is dignity in helping others when they are helping you. If we took this approach, then when a real problem that the church can’t fix comes along, the government might have the money to address it.
I remember when my father hired 14 developmentally disabled adults. Most of them had downs syndrome. The government supplied 2 “Coaches” to manage 7 people each. They were tasked with evening cleanup at his snack food factory. The program allowed him to pay only $30 hr for all 14 adults. Don’t get me wrong, because I came to love each and everyone of them, but it was like herding cats. The two coaches were worth their weight in gold as they managed to keep them focused long enough to get the job done perfectly.
What I learned from this experience is that the developmentally disabled have every need, want and desire you and I have. And that the program was WOEFULLY UNDERFUNDED. The coaches were paid by the state and made only $12 hour. The workers were paid by the state at minimum wage.
The problem with government is the loud strong voices dominate. These people barely had a voice. I’ll support these programs ALL DAY LONG. Single mothers with daddies that are perfectly capable of supporting the mother and child(ren), NOT AT ALL.
It used to be when a man decided to leave his family, there was a strong possibility that his children might starve. Since government got into the business of welfare, the single mother rate has skyrocketed. Mostly because today there is no significant consequences for the daddy.
