I taught High School at the American School in Aleppo Syria 1990–91. At the time I thought the oppression of Hafez al Assad was brutal. However, after the fall of Saddam, Gaddafi and Hosni Mubarak I began to understand why these despotic leaders are necessary for that part of the world.

This isn’t to say I support them, but they really do need to figure this out for themselves.

This isn’t about democracy or freedom or liberty. It’s about resources, specifically, oil. The irony is that since all of these entanglements began, the west has identified huge oil deposits in it’s own back yard.
