This reminds me of a time when I was teaching high-school in Aleppo, Syria. My flatmate came into my bedroom really excited and told me that the news was on and it was in English.

I quickly came out to the living room to watch the television. The banner at the bottom of the screen was “President Assad visits Egypt”. It showed Assad shaking hands on the tarmac with dignitaries from the government.

The problem was, it didn’t explain anything. Not even the reason for the visit. Just that Assad was visiting Egypt. I looked at my flatmate and said “what the hell is this”. He said in his broken English, “It’s the news”. I couldn’t help myself, I laughed.
