Kavanaugh Debate: A call for civility
The Orlando Sentinel published this article on Sunday, October 7th, the same day it announced the confirmation of Judge Kavanaugh to the United States Supreme Court the day before. As we all know, the confirmation process was bitter and contentious and exposed the enormous divide our country is feeling in the face of numerous issues. My article was not intended to address the merits of the individual claims by Dr. Ford or Judge Kavanaugh — that was done all too much in the media; it simply focused on the underlying process where emotionally-charged issues confront each other in a public forum. The underlying context was that in those circumstances, more than at any other time, adherence to constitutional standards and a sense of decency and fair play are critical. It concluded with a call for civility and the need to heal ourselves as we move on at this point.
