WriteMarch: Kicking off a Writing Ritual
It started with an idea and a domain: WriteMarch.com (not yet in service).
Despite everything I know about habit formation, particularly through BJ Fogg’s work, I decided to pursue a slightly gimmicky attempt to write again. My last post on Medium was before I started my current job two years ago.
Sometimes I get stuck in my head or let some weird version of fear prevent me from putting words to paper or pixels. I believe a relatively low commitment of writing over 31 days will increase the clarity of my thoughts and confidence in my viewpoints. If nothing else, I may learn more about myself in the process.
When I began fleshing out the concept, I considered whether I would self-impose the number of words or minutes of writing each day. I wondered whether I would adhere to a rigid structure for the outputs. I determined the perfect daily ritual that cycles through the four stages of creativity: preparation, incubation, illumination, and verification. Ultimately, those kinds of constraints aren’t critical; it’s more important to write and ideally click “publish” each day.
And with that, I publish this perfectly imperfect post.
