Youtube Let’s Creators Give Back.
New tools to boost charitable fundraising.
Charity fundraising is about to get a huge boost thanks to the video-sharing giant YouTube. The video platform with 1.8 billion monthly active users announced upcoming fundraising tools that will allow YouTube creators and registered non-profits to embed fundraising campaigns right next to their videos and live streams.
The first tool is called Fundraiser and is so brilliantly simple I'm surprised it hasn't been done before.

The internet is no stranger to viral charity campaigns. The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge became an internet phenomenon in 2014, with over 17 million participants raising 115 million dollars. With this new feature creators can raise money directly from their video page instead of directing viewers to a separate site. Streamlining this process can mean exponential gains for charities and nonprofits. Due to the fickleness of the internet audience, shaving as many seconds between consuming content and supporting it is paramount to success.
The second tool YouTube announced is titled Community Fundraiser. The name is pretty self explanatory. It’s basically an expansion of the fundraiser tool that allows multiple creators to co-host the same fundraiser event or initiative. YouTube is populated with active creator communities that collaborate in and support each other's content: gamers, tech reviewers, beauty channels, etc. This new feature should only strengthen community engagement. As an added bonus this feature can help introduce smaller channels in a community to a large audience; enticing them to create better content not just for charity but also for channel growth.
To support these new features YouTube is also rolling out it’s Campaign Matching feature. Creators who organize successful fundraisers will be able to receive matching pledges to help their cause. Matching pledges will be displayed within the fundraiser page boosting the publicity of the charity, but also of the person or business matching the donation. It’s not a stretch to say that in the near future we could see several celebrities and corporations in need of a quick PR boost participating in a viral campaign. How exciting!
The final feature in this rollout is aimed at boosting charitable donations on YouTube's live streams, titled Super Chat For Good. Using the Super Chat payment system, which lets viewers pay to have their comment highlighted to attract the streamer’s attention. This new feature will allow creators to donate all their Super Chat contributions to a charity or non-profit of their choice. YouTube is playing catch-up in the live streaming industry to competitors Twitch and Facebook. Features like this can attract the attention of big name streamers who would like to use their popularity to help others.
These new tools are still in the beta phase with only a handful of creators in the US and Canada allowed to participate. It is unclear when these features will be made available to the masses, but it’s not hard to see the potential these tools possess.
