Much of what this article describes as the failing of today’s journalism can be attributed to a host of causes: protecting one’s rear end (and job), moral timidity, the bandwagon effect, intellectual laziness, lack of imagination, unwillingness to ask the obvious next question, fear of reprisal, “good manners,” and accommodation as openmindedness.
Trump makes or dumb-like-a-fox statement and the interviewer or reporter fails to engage. So much could be accomplished by asking the next obvious question that the rest of us are asking. “Why do you say that? Why did you decide/do that? Do you really believe that?”
Way too much deference to the office when people crave answers that only a reporter or interviewer can get.
