My Aotearoa is…

A poem inspired by a spoken word workshop I took part in recently

I’m no poet, but recently I took part in a spoken word workshop organised by my friend Ramon, cofounder of the South Auckland Poets Collective. He asked us to describe our vision for Aotearoa using the five senses and metaphors. Here’s what I came up with:

My Aotearoa is

A mansion of a million rooms

A table of a thousand seats

A garden full of edible leaves

And everyone is welcome

My Aotearoa is

A green rainbow paradise

Where art has replaced advertisements

We indulge in community not consumerism

And representative democracy no longer exists

Because everyone participates

It smells like summer memories

It tastes like soul food

It sounds like laughter

It feels like home

I dream of the day we put down our phones

Because we realise the power to communicate across vast lands and seas

Existed within us all along

My Aotearoa is

A mansion of a million rooms

A table of a thousand seats

A garden full of edible leaves

And everyone is welcome
