Yoga: how to start from scratch
If you are wondering why you constantly hear about yoga and it’s more and more discussed all over the internet and the social medias, I can help you out with the answer: doing yoga means to dedicate quality time to yourself, forget about all your problems and concentrate on your wellness.
You may also have found out that there are different types of yoga: some more dynamic, other more meditation-based. I am here to talk about my experience and share with you how I first started with this beautiful practice.
The question I receive the most is: “how did you start it?”. Well, my first yoga lesson was all by myself, watching a video on Youtube. I decided to try it because I wanted to know what it meant: at that time I knew nobody that had that passion, it wasn’t “cool” yet and I felt as a very personal choice. Today it’s the opposite: everybody does yoga, all around the world, and if you don’t know what it is you’re the outsider.
I do like to share my experience because for me it was an important step into my spiritual life: I discovered both yoga and meditation together and — totally out of the blue — I started to feel the vibe, as they say.
I have to admit, though, that the first yoga lessons that I did weren’t my fav. I don’t know why but I preferred to continue it by myself, still using Youtube. Finally, when I moved to Milan, where I live now, I started to meet people who loves yoga like me and we started to create a community: we like to organize yoga meetups and to attend yoga lessons together. That’s so motivating!
SUGGESTION NO.1: try yoga a few times before deciding if you like it or not. As I said, there are different kind of yoga, so you might want to try it in different places and occasions and then find your own path.
What is a Yoga Challenge?
If you use Instagram, I am sure you saw somebody participating in a yoga challenge. The concept is quite simple: some people called hosts decide the poses that every participant has to do during the challenge, that usually goes on for a week or two. At the end of the challenge, the hosts decide who wins it. Normally, the prizes are yoga wearing and yoga accessories.
When I did my first challenge I was really motivated by the hope to win something, because I liked the idea that somebody was giving me something totally for free, without a big effort from my side. After a while, I realized I wasn’t participating in a yoga challenge for the gifts no more, but because it is way more than that.
When you take part in a yoga challenge, you feel part of a community that shares your same interests and you also find out that other people enjoy what you do. Every progress you make is appreciated and — at the same time — it is way easier to improve in the practice, because the hosts always explain you how to do the poses and what are the most common mistakes.
Thanks to the yoga challenges you will also dedicate more time to yoga and you will actually see the improvements really fast, because you have to take pictures of the poses so you can compare them easily.
SUGGESTION NO.2: start with the poses you are more naturally disposed to do. When you practice, you will see that you have an inclination for the heart opener poses, for the hips or maybe the forward bends. After that, when you start feeling proud of the results, challenge yourself with the other poses, the ones that you really strive to do!
