“It’s okay to talk about this.” – Bekah Miles

Bekah Miles decided she had enough and wanted to take that leap of faith by sharing with her friends and family on Facebook about being diagnosed with depression. That she is finally come to light about this important mental issue to get it out there for it had been long that it was buried inside of her.

“Everybody struggles with something. You just might not know it by looking at someone.” – Bekah Miles

Facebook Post – Tattoo symbolizing her Depression

When she posted on August 23, 2015 about this, she never thought it would get noticed the way it did. She just thought just her friends and family would see it, but not just them anymore. The whole world that’s on Facebook saw it, commented, liked 500,000 and shared 400,000. She was amazed and yet surprised that it got more attention than she ever thought it would. Below is her tattoo that she got to help her “wanting to get a tattoo around my depression showing just a symbol to myself.”

“It’s okay to be known.” ~ Bekah Miles

Bekah’s story became known…

After she posted her story about her depression and her tattoo, Huffington Post ( InkedMag, aplus, Fox5Atlanta, Somecards, People, MSN, Fox News, Seventeen, Pop Sugar, KGWB, Fox 12 Oregon, Independent, DailyMail, plus many more) wrote about her story and how her story inspired others to share, spread awareness about her story and how encouraging it is the way she came out about her struggles. But not only that, but Zooey Deschanel and Ashton Kutcher shared her article with their own caption about people just like Bekah Miles.

Major depressive disorder affects nearly 15 million people in the U.S.

And without a doubt, it encouraged many others who are currently battling mental illnesses most likely the two common: depression and anxiety plus the other mental illnesses out there too; that it’s okay to talk about it. No matter how powerful the stigma is, it is possible to break the cycle from that. Ignore that voice telling you to lay in bed for hours and talk about it. Believe me, it’s the right thing. It may take a lot of courage but always know it will be worth it in the end. Remember: your not alone!

Relatable, inspiring, encouraging, uplifting and understandable

After knowing every detail about what Bekah Miles did online about her depression and her tattoo, it really inspired and encouraged me to try harder at having as much courage as she had when she posted this, when I do get my diagnosis (July 2016). I have experienced a few depressive episodes in my past life but finally have accomplished my recovery. It took me over a year to recover. Thinking about all the big stages/steps in the recovery, it made me realize it’s inspiring to anyone who suffers from either depression, anxiety or any other diagnosed/undiagnosed illness in the brain.

Looking at all the articles about Bekah Miles’s breakthrough with her depression, has helped me realize and learn a few things that I didn’t believe nor know was true. And knowing from what she said, that it’s okay to talk about this, has encouraged me to continue gaining enough courage to do the same. To speak publicly, openly & shameless about my own mental health struggles throughout my past life. (My Twitter account, tweet of this article)

Bekah Miles mentioned in “Street Art Globe” Instagram post

Below is my comment on a post on her Instagram account:

Your such an inspiration and role model to those who are still suffering and those who have suffered! And I’m one of the many people out there in the world that admire what you chose to do: speaking out about your mental illness on Facebook (not knowing the result outcomes of that action itself). For what it took to do something as couragious as this, really inspires, and encourages others to do the same. You said in your video that “It’s okay to talk about this” and also “Everybody struggles with something. You just might not know it by looking at someone.” And also “It’s just so important for everyone to know that they’re not alone and they’re not the only ones that feel the way they do.” Really are inspiring and ever so helpful. And I do believe that it’s so wrong and bad that mental health and mental illness barely get the attention that it truly deserves. People think about their physical health but never ever think about their mental health. And that is a huge part of what can and has killed others for this being part of the stigma surrounding it. We need to make this change here and help not only educate others on mental health but help them help us end this stigma to help save others in the near future from cutting for the first time or attempting suicide. It’s wrong and we need to help change the way society views mental health overall. And we can’t do it alone, more people that join us, the better results we get to the end point with removing the stigma and saving millions of those still currently suffering. In conclusion, I want to add that those who are reading this that want to help those that they know and love or even those who are strangers to them, be kind. You would most likely know nothing about a battle someone is fighting/battling. So please, be kind. Compliment them,it’ll make their day even though they are still suffering. And a positive comment may not help them out of their illness but make it seem less alone to themselves and make it a easier for them to speak up about it and get the help they need knowing it’s a good thing to seek overall. #imnotashamed #sicknotweak #mentalhealthmatters
