A Mother’s Work

An interview with a self employed mother

I spoke with Julie Keys this week. Julie owns the Daisy Foundation Lanarkshire. In addition to holding classes for pregnant ladies and classes for babies and carers, Julie has created a supportive community for all her clients and former clients, if they so wish to be involved. Julie is mum to 2 children — Emily is 7 and Sam is 5, and will start school in August. I spoke to Julie about running her own business whilst bringing up her children…

Did you change your job/career path after having children?

Yes

Why?

I made the decision to buy the Daisy Foundation when I was pregnant with Sam. I thought it would give me the flexibility to work it around my children, which it has to an extent. It’s a lot of work though and I’ve had to make sacrifices.

How does your job now differ to the one you had before having children?

I don’t really have any time off. I’m always on call and never switch off. However, most days I do the school runs, so it’s a balance. I’m responsible for it all at Daisy so if there are any unforeseen circumstances I have to pick up the pieces. I am quite reliant on my family at times like that.

Before Daisy I could go in to work, do my job, leave at 5 and switch off. I definitely don’t have that now but then, in my previous job I couldn’t have done the school runs or be there to do the homework.

What are the best things about your job?

I love my job! I wouldn’t change it for the world! I love spending time with the children after school most days. I love meeting so many special people. I love that our group is so sociable and seeing what everyone gets from that. I watch the mums that meet at Daisy classes stay friends for years and see their children grow up together. It’s really lovely.

What’s your top tip for MumtiTasking?!

My top tip would be to write a list and to ask for help. We are not telepathic and quite often I expect my hubby to know the conversations going on in my head! Communication is the best way to multitask so that everyone knows how they can help best.

Great advice, thanks Julie!
