Can I ask a question to the community? And to be clear, it comes only from a desire for understanding other people’s experiences and perspectives. If it comes across as ignorant then I apologise (but the cure to ignorance is asking and learning, surely!)
I have struggled for a long time with understanding gender non-binaryism. I guess my feeling (or confusion) is that talking about being gender creative only plays into the gender constructs that needn’t be there in the first place. Why does wearing dresses and make up make your son more female than male? Why can’t I like masculine things and have feelings that are stereotypically associated with masculinity, but still be fully female in my gender?
I think maybe this piece touched upon that same idea with “I’m a boy who likes girl things” — but I suppose my question is, who gets to say that those are “girl things”?
