Paleo & Zone: The Most Efficient Way To Feed Your Body
When this tweet popped up in my feed, I was so inspired to answer it that I decided my longer words would find a better home here than on Twitter.
So, here we are…ready to bust into a question and get into the nitty-gritty of why Eatology upholds the early principles found in Paleo-Zone nutrition!
Your first statement questions why we use a Macro breakdown in our Paleo meals such as we do….
Eatology believes in clean, whole foods balanced with macros based on Paleo AND Zone methods:
“In “The Paleo Diet” Cordain states these are Protein: 19–35%, Carbohydrate: 22–40%, and Fat: 28–47% of calories.
So Sears took and average as his basis for the Zone diet’s ratio of protein 30%, carbohydrates 40% calories and fat 30%. Sears also notes that there is a continuum — that the protein: carbohydrate ratio may vary depending on insulin response of each person. And if you don’t need to lose weight, additional fats should be added to increase calories — primarily mono-unsaturated fats, olive oil and macadamia for example.” (Thank you Julianne)
At the same time, your statement brings up a really good point… ”What is Paleo?”…
At the end of the day, in the most simple of words, without all the sciencey bullshit, Coach Greg Glassman says it best:
“Eat meat and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit, little starch and no sugar. Keep intake to levels that will support exercise, but not body fat.”
The great thing about his wording is that it’s simple enough that anyone can apply it without being enslaved to percentages of numbers that can only be measured with our latest effort to domesticate the human body.
At Eatology, we like to leave the definition of Paleo to be clean, whole-food ingredients, eaten responsibly.
We do advocate Zone as we find the Block method to be a very good visual for portion control and easier for people to apply day-to-day than percentages. The 7/9/1.5 ratio gives us a place to “start from” and from there it can be tweaked per individual needs.
So, in sum, per the Paleo community…I think we “get it right.”
