Last Saturday morning I was laying in bed and checked the Huffington Post — 284 Biden and 214 Trump. I texted my best friend immediately, a sex worker and well versed politico, who responded;

“Yes! They’re calling Biden President Elect Biden on the news!”

I was ecstatic and somewhat in disbelief, because personally I was sure Trump’s dirty pool tactics would get him another four years in office.

Madam VP Elect, your win as a woman and especially as a woman of color is absolutely historical and worthy of excitement. …

I believe that, generally speaking, those of us who enter the realms of social justice to become activists and advocates have good intentions. In my ten plus years as an activist and employee of numerous nonprofits, I have noticed many things about others and myself. I remember when I first started work as a domestic violence case manager for a nonprofit organization I felt, in many ways, that my success as an advocate was dependent upon the perceived successes of my clients. There was a part of me that felt like a professional failure when…

How family estrangement broke my sex-working heart

// Isolation by Yasuhisa Yamazaki

Dear Cyntoia,

First let me start by saying congratulations on your release. Your case has been so inspiring to all of us who live at the intersections of sex work and sex trafficking. I won’t presume to know how you identify — whether as a sex trafficking survivor, sex worker, both or neither- I believe how each person in the sex industry identifies themselves is a highly personal thing, and I will not presume to know what the nature of that relationship is. …

Im a witch. No, I don’t wear a black pointy hat and stir a bubbling cauldron. Being a witch is a little like a religion in that there are a million ways to practice and no one witch works their craft in the same way. So what do I mean when I say “witch” in this modern day? Glad you asked. Though there are variations, witchcraft can encompass many paths, including but not limited to, Wicca, Santeria, Conjure, Paganism, Druidism, green magic, white magic and black magic or Magick, as Aleister Crowley falls it. This is by no means comprehensive…

The other day, after a “women’s sex-based rights” talk that Julie Bindel gave at Edinburgh University, Bindel tweeted that following her talk she was “violently attacked” by a trans woman, who in her tweet she knowingly misgendered as “a man.” Another speaker, however, confirmed that Bindel was never even physically touched. Cathy Brennan, the Trans woman in question, was deliberately misgendered as a man by Bindel after what was later said to be just a heated verbal exchange between Brennan and Bindel.

I have experienced violence at the hands of cis men for my whole life as a woman and…

As a non-binary Trans person with a uterus, I have been pretty disappointed with how little I have seen cishet (cisgender and heterosexual) men show up for all people whom these new abortion policies impact (cis women, Trans men and non-binary people). The 25 state senators who voted in favor of abortion restrictions in Alabama were all — yes every single one- a white cisgender male. The opposition to the bill included just three — THREE- white cis men among six state senators of color (both men and women), one white woman and two more senators who did not participate…

I’m a Trans person. A Trans person who only recently fake out, rather late in life (by many peoples arbitrary standards). I identify mostly as a guy but still identify as a girl as well. I suppose technically, one might refer to me as non-binary or genderqueer. I recently started using the name Adrien and asking that people use they/them or he/him pronouns for me. A process that has been extremely difficult, and even shameful for me.

As a Trans person, there is a lot of pressure to “look cis” as an indication that one is a “successful” Trans person…

Today marks one year that FOSTA (Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act) And SESTA (Stop Enabling Sex Traffickers Act) were passed into law. In this one year, I’ve seen my community of sex workers and trafficking survivors struggling to survive. My sex worker siblings are being evicted because they can’t pay their rent, they’re taking riskier dates and ignoring their intuition out of sheer desperation. My trafficking survivor friends are still living in homeless shelters, on the streets and going back to abusive pimps to be able to feed their kids.

I know personally I almost got raped and drugged by…
