Once upon a time, I was a new freelance writer trying to get my business up and running. I applied to countless jobs and heard back from very few, as is the standard in this line of work.

When a prospective client actually responded to my application, I was ecstatic. If I was offered a job, I pretty much always accepted it, even when I knew it wasn’t a good fit.
