Yes, yes. I was deeply puzzled by the overall portrayal of Gen X in this piece—is it an age segment thing, or maybe geographic? (I’m a little possessive of the label since it was coined the year I graduated from college to describe people that were about to graduate from college.) Quintessential Gen X is the way Kurt Cobain sings the chorus of “Get Together” at the start of “Territorial Pissings”. If you grew up with the Youngbloods on the radio, you know how fervently and authentically people believed that message— laughably (and mockably) naive progressivism that still makes me shake my head reflexively. (Also, in what universe are hipsters part of Gen X?)
