Let’s talk about bitches

It’s been on my mind for an awful long time now. I’m going to say it here. It won’t go over very well with some.

Why can everyone in the world say bitch, but only some can say the N word?

I’m white. I’m female. Why is one word taboo for me because of the color of my skin and the other a world-wide free for all?

I think most of us know that bitch is the female word for a dog. SO why is it okay for all people to use the word without sanction? How can anyone call a woman a bitch without thinking first? But we do. We all do. Except for those who are religious or just not into cussing, we all do it. We also use it against men. It degrades men because it compares them to women. We all know that it’s a major insult to a man to be called a “girl.”

I’ve said, “Me and my bitches are going out tonight.” But I’ve also said, “She’s a mean bitch.” Is one bitch good and the other evil, like Glenda and her witchy sister? Glenda goes out at night with her bitches, but leaves her bitchy sister at home. Bitch is a hurtful word. It’s sexist. It’s also morphed into a unifying word. A word to describe strong women, fearless women. I wonder how many men use the word that way. There’s a feminist magazine named BitchMedia. I encourage you to check it out.

The “N WORD” must not be used by anyone who is not black. Period. It’s wrong. It’s a hateful word filled with venom, and shameful history, and it’s horrible. But there are black people who feel entitled to use the word. And they do. I hear it all the time. Television, Internet, real life. Now I know that the word “entitled” is filled with bristles. I bristle at it. But it’s true. Sometimes we don’t like the truth.

Because I’m a woman, should I begin to feel entitled to say bitch? If I feel entitled, should I claim it as only my gender’s and create a taboo around men using the word? Bitch is a hurtful word. It’s sexist.

Seriously. Who’s defending women against the use of the word bitch? I’m free to write the word bitch, bitch, bitch as much as I want, and so can you even if you’re a man. But if I spell out the N word, I’m condemned because I’m white.

Here’s what I’m trying to say: We must respect ALL people regardless of race, culture, gender, or beliefs. How can we ever learn to do this if we’re degrading more than half the population? MORE THAN HALF, people!

We choose to give words power. Let’s choose to give them the power to lift us up rather than put us down. No one should own a word. No one. And we should never, ever let a word own us.
