If the era of the large-scale independent internet startup is coming to an end, what happens to opportunities for social advancement or social justice that relied on the same fragile cultural underpinnings?

You’re concern is on-point. As a growth marketer for a South Asian dating app, I am experiencing first hand just how hard it is to successfully scale an app when there are ambiguous policies being put into place without thoughtful consideration for the social implications…for instance, I’m not allowed to re-market to my audience on Google because of their policy banning marketing to particular ethnic groups (not the exact language but I have it in my email) … the list goes on and if I wasn’t waiting for approval to advertise I would talk more publicly about other challenges.

I got into marketing because I wanted to help technology change people’s lives … at this rate, I’m worried ‘the system’ is going to prevent good apps and innovations from ever reaching the market because they are caught up in a complicated policy mess.

We need transparency first and then standards that are followed and enforced.
