“In the real world trust takes time.” This is so important and something I’ve been thinking about a lot. How do we build trust within our communities if we don’t feel truly apart of them? You said you feel somewhat on the “outs” even though you have a connection to the community. I feel that way too. I’ve been a teacher, but I am not a parent dealing with school segregation, and I am not a longtime resident of the area I now live in. It’s feels disingenuous as an outsider of a community to try and collect personal information about the people who live there. However, that’s not really our intention as social journalists is it? People are pretty good at when other people are being genuine or not. So, I guess we will just have to rely on our own instincts and intentions when building trust.
