The Swipe File That Gets Me Through The Lousiest Times =)
Last week wasn’t a fun week, to say the very least. But as a grown up, I still had to pummel through without missing a beat.
My secret to surviving a terrible week?
I complete one project or chunk of tasks, then I reward myself with 30-minute happy, motivating and inspiring breaks that include watching videos, reading specific articles or re-reading a feel-good email that reminds me that I have made progress, even if it doesn’t feel like it in the present moment.
Here’s a handful of my feel-good go-tos during the not-so fun times. Hope some of them help you as much as they always help me.
Probably the coolest mom and daughter duo ever.
Funniest unsubscribe video ever.
I feel this girl… It’s exactly what I did when I learned Aziz Ansari has a beau.
I watch this when I just want to laugh and not think about anything substantial.
This video rubs a lot of people the wrong way. I personally love it.
Always love me a funny, creative marketing video. This one’s by Hootsuite.
I haven’t seen the new Steve Jobs film since all the negative feedback about how it doesn’t accurately represent Jobs. Until then, I enjoyed the trailer.
I love commencement speeches. This one’s by Tim Cook, and I feel particularly inspired by it.
Speaking of commencement speeches, this is THE commencement speech of all commencement speeches.
“And since then, for the past 33 years, I have looked in the mirror every morning and asked myself: ‘If today were the last day of my life, would I want to do what I am about to do today?’ And whenever the answer has been ‘No’ for too many days in a row, I know I need to change something.” Steve Jobs
Another funny email video.
Always enjoy re-watching this video. If you’re under 30 or know an ~30 year-old, watch it.
Yes, you can totally judge me for including this one, but don’t lie, Mariah made a pretty catchy beat here. lol
Travis Kalanick kills it in this video. I like to watch it to absorb how he pitches so well.
This little girl is brilliant.
Ignore the title. I love what Ronda Rousey says in this video. #Justice
Screw everyone who tells you “you can’t.”
This video cracks me up.
I have my mom to blame for loving this song so much.
Oldie but goodie with Michael Jordan.
Again, screw everyone who tells you can’t do something.
It’s really this simple…
“Nobody tells this to people who are beginners, I wish someone told me. All of us who do creative work, we get into it because we have good taste. But there is this gap. For the first couple years you make stuff, it’s just not that good. It’s trying to be good, it has potential, but it’s not. But your taste, the thing that got you into the game, is still killer. And your taste is why your work disappoints you. A lot of people never get past this phase, they quit. Most people I know who do interesting, creative work went through years of this. We know our work doesn’t have this special thing that we want it to have. We all go through this. And if you are just starting out or you are still in this phase, you gotta know its normal and the most important thing you can do is do a lot of work. It’s gonna take awhile. It’s normal to take awhile. You’ve just gotta fight your way through.” ― Ira Glass
