The Reason for Pain

why bad things happen to good people

What if you woke up one day, and nothing went wrong. There were no more news stories, no more ambulances or police sirens racing down the road, no more murders or missing persons on your milk carton, no more pain and fear haunting your mind. Life wouldn’t be life without demons outside your door keeping you awake at night. There would be no heaven or hell, no good or bad, no happiness or fear, and everything you were ever taught about protecting yourself, wouldn’t matter. The first things you’ve ever learned about not talking to strangers or not running into the street, would just go away.

Life isn’t meant to be easy. You’re going to lose things, and you’re going to fall down. Sometimes, you might fall so hard that you can’t find the courage and strength to get back up again. That’s when you find yourself searching for a reason. A meaning for hatred, and an explanation for anger.

If God made life, and he’s so perfect and giving, why did he make it so hard? And the truth to that unspoken question, is that life is a test. If you fail, you’re sent to hell, but if you pass, you go to heaven.

And I know that it’s cruel, and it doesn’t seem like a good enough reason for why pain exists and why bad things happen to good people, but it’s the best explanation I can think of.

One clap, two clap, three clap, forty?

By clapping more or less, you can signal to us which stories really stand out.
