My First Day as a Volunteer

As somebody who has had some experience in volunteering for different organizations, I have learned that each organization is different especially on your first day.

Some organizations make you fill out paper work, others put you straight to work, and the best show you the ropes of the place. I was lucky enough to walk into Beaufort County Animal Shelter on my first day and be shown the ins and outs of the shelter. I was especially appreciative because there is nothing worse than walking in somewhere and having no clue what is going on.

A great feature of BCAS is that they have designated work times for volunteers. If you prefer to participate in cleaning the cages, feedings, etc. then it is advised to go in the mornings. If you are interested in socializing with the animals then the afternoon is your best bet.

I decided that I would socialize with the animals on my first day. I arrived at the shelter at 2 PM and as I was walking into the main office I heard sounds that I would expect from a shelter. Dogs barking, howling, and happy tails hitting the sides of their kennels but I also heard a sound that seemed unfamiliar. I heard a muffled snorting from a van. My curiosity took over and I quickly peeked over… TWO PIGS! I was overcome with excitement because I LOVE PIGS!

I checked in with one of the staff and she assigned me to work with Tony. Tony was a real helping hand on my first day and had an answer for every question I asked (believe me…I ask a lot of questions). I played with the dogs, admired the two pigs and was shown all of the different kennels. One part of my experience that really touched me was when I asked Tony why there were mainly Pit Bulls and Pit Bull mixes. Sadly, he explained to me that people aren’t interested in them the way they are over smaller dogs. This pulled on my heartstrings because the dogs are so friendly and sweet. I have a hard time swallowing the fact that Pit Bulls have an unwarranted negative stigma. Overall it felt enlightening to be out in the fresh air and sunshine running around with these beautiful dogs that have come from all walks of life and are waiting for a new family.
