Does gear matter for video and photo?
I’m not an artist.
However, art is a very important part of my work.
As a marketer, I need creativity to make people, companies, startups, organizations, famous on the Internet and beyond.
I also need creative stuff to illustrate the campaign. It could be text, photo, video or audio.
I‘m a creator for the past 20 years in all these fields, but my only focus was to get better at the marketing game.
From a very convenient perspective, the geek/nerd inside me likes very much tech gear.
I like to try out new things, and I love to observe how tech improves our lives.
Until this year, I needed to bring a camera rig, a computer, and the full smartly connected pack of tech gear.
Now, I can do pretty much everything with a phone and a tablet.
Sometimes, just the phone is required.
Let me explain.
It’s all about the right gear for the right job.
I love mountain biking, and I’m lucky to have nearby one of those crazy moutain biking competition, where riders go over 60k/h down a very steep and sketchy trail.
It’s broadcasted live on Redbull.tv.
Redbull is no joke.
They have a full on TV set build in a few hours in the middle of nowhere.
It’s massive.
Media coverage is big. You see a lot of professional photographes, carrying huge 50kg backpacks. Usually followed by one or more assistants, carrying more gear.
I carry my iPhone, most of the time.
When I’m in a photo test mood, I will take out my “prosumer” ( sweet price point between “professional” and “consumer” devices) gear.
Throughout the years, I’ve been on the search for the perfect gear.
It helps my workflow.
In the age of communication on the Internet, we need to be very fast and efficient.
Weight is always a concern. Simply because it’s a hassle to carry around lots of stuff.
Since you can only get so much done by sitting behind a desk, travelling with gear is inevitable.
Today, my pro gear weighs around 2kg.

And it costs less than €3 000.
I can do as much as Redbull with less than the price of gas for them.
Tech has been blowing off my mind forever, but this year is crazy.
Almost anyone can own some very serious equipment to shoot video or photo.
If you don’t have a couple thousand, there are excellent solutions for a few hundreds.
We are in a golden era for tech gear.
Trust me, I speak from the point of view of a tech lover who goes back to times when Internet didn’t exist.
Some companies out there are trying very hard to grab our money by bringing value. A few are winning. It’s not always the startup nation. Some old dogs are fighting back.
Only variable left is “how good are you?”.
It’s not the gear that makes the shot, but let’s admit it : gear is cool.
