I remember struggling with that question as the parent of three young children. Then it resurfaced when I retired. Finding a purpose, whether it be raising children, volunteering, writing, or any other passion makes answering the question unnecessary.
I’m not totally sure. When my cousin was alive, her later born children tolerated and socialized at family events with her first child. I suspect they were unprepared for this unknown sibling, and once my cousin was gone, they no longer felt a connection. There are other family stressors as well, so my knowledge is limited.

I totally missed your point about the truck. Yes, a new one would be full of stuff you don’t need that is so expensive to repair! I’m with your on the dental thing. Need to spend more on my teeth in the next months than it would have cost to take a nice vacation.
