Americans at work for you: telephone linemen, 1964, afl-cio

The telephone man is here

The social media of not all that long ago was built house by house, wire by wire.

In old promo pieces, the idea that you could pick up a phone in one place and talk to someone in another was still a new thought.

When trucks roll out to install phones in living rooms, and workers rush to repair phone lines downed in storms, there’s drama. There are emergencies.

An ice storm coats phone lines, circa 1964; the telephone line crew must come to the rescue.

There is technological exceptionalism.

The medium is different, but the message is still the same: only connect.
