Oh, and if you want an anecdotal example of the economic reality: my Mother, who had a high school degree and no work history, landed a job when I was in high school that paid exactly as much as I make as an adjunct professor - though she had good benefits and job security, unlike me, and very obviously the cost of living is FAR higher now than it was in 1983. So spare me the fantasy peddled by writers with a romanticized view - I'm too busy trying to survive working two jobs while being buried by student loans to take reading assignments.
