The political landscape is currently in turmoil. I think the main contributing factor is to be found in the explanations of the preceding sections. Humans started a venture back in the stone age, which was to make sure we didn’t have to work all the time. We’ve largely succeeded. We spend more time than ever on entertainment, and we have loads of spare time with which to pursue hobbies and doing other ventures than work. This is a tremendously good thing!
With the work I’ve been doing on quantifying developer experience data as a means of creating a data-driven feedback loop for the team, I also ended up with quantitive data on “the deadline effect” that shows a step function cost increase in troubleshooting time associated with developers rushing to get features completed by the deadline. The more complex & difficult the team’s work, the harder it is to predict, which can exacerbate these effects to a degree that will cause the project to spin out of control. Deadlines are certainly useful for aligning work, but with data, we can’t keep pretending there’s no side-effects.
