"Safeguarding Lives: How a $1 Million Grant Aims to Revolutionize Prescription Drug Monitoring and Curb Overdoses"

Funded by a $1M Department of Justice grant, The UC Davis Center for Healthcare Policy and Research aims to transform prescription drug misuse combat strategies. The center’s focus is enhancing systems like California’s Controlled Substance Utilization and Review System (CURES) to improve prescribing practices and define new patient safety alerts. By leveraging data analysis, the team hopes to gain insights into prescribing patterns and their links to fatal overdose risks, update safety alerts in CURES, and tackle “alert fatigue” among clinicians. It also plans to inform patients about prescription drug dangers and medication plan adherence. The project could drastically reduce nationwide drug overdoses by rewriting prescription guidelines, using data analysis, and innovating safety alerts.
