The Revolution Will Not Be on their Internet

I recently listened to an episode of Freakonomics that got my wheels turning. It was an episode on how we might be making the internet worse. Well not us, we’re awesome. No, the giant corporations. They’re doing it. By siloing off our sense of choice. By giving us 2 bad choices and shaping the conversation.

I’ve developed the beginnings of 9 technologies that would drastically shift the balance of power to the masses in everything from elections to information to the justice system. These are a sketch. I hope to discuss this more with member of progcode and the Brand New Congress movement.

Open Voting & Polling Machines

A verifiable blockchain that takes in votes, ballots and voters. Each voter can only vote once and extra care will be made to try to cheat the system and vote multiple times or otherwise commit fraud with the system. The device and design of the UI should be secondary to the underlying technology that records and verifies votes. Though there is some value in standardizing User Interfaces for voting so everyone knows what to expect.

Second Internet Infrastructure via localized Wifi & Lifi Devices

In the event of Telecom takeover the Purpose of this project is to setup waystations for long distance internet transfer via lifi towers and smaller house to house wifi transfer at the last mile. A dongle attached to the Routers can use already existing wifi technology to power this second network that feeds from the main network when it needs to. A fail safe to take the larger companies ability to deindex the truth or paralyze a movement’s Internet capabilities.

Open Sourcing Search

Recreating Newsgroups. Indexing and Archiving of the entire internet using Bit Torrent and compression for storage of the archives and distributed cloud fallbacks for the indexes. For search even setting up a search engine randomizer on Chrome is the 1st step away from the information tyranny of Google. The advantage to any algorithm that competes with google is, if it’s paid for, it can offer search results and privacy options a company built around advertising never could. The only question is, can we pay for the outer worldly infrastructure it would take to index and make searchable, the entire internet. Do we need to reindex the internet to get a fair look at our internet. Perhaps it could specialize in subjects google sees fit to censor? And the anti-establishment sites that the cable companies would censor if they could. Yeah, a Lexus Nexus for the revolutionary on the go.

Local Politics or Social Media?

For social media and sharing. We have to own our posts and it must be ad free without coercive algorithms. Avoiding the echo chamber of FB and Twitter. You know what, fuck it. Social Media is dead. Let facebook ring it’s ears until it dies or sticks around like some sad mall or theme park that no one wants to go to. Sharing is best done in person. Although one wonders what a giant open chat room for all members of one member’s district. With the ability to post new articles and other urls. Probably like Reddit more than facebook. Perhaps just partnering with reddit on a series of congressional district rooms (or whatever they’re called).

Open Source Nation Builder

Web Sites must be able to be hosted in a very adaptive way. Quick and performant, useful for information, communication and network building. Webpages must be quickly editable with pictures and text. Design must change with the times and be responsive to all screen sizes.

Use existing technology where possible to collaborate on these initial collaboration projects. Rewrite specific tools for productivity and ease of use. Perhaps create an API to the Nation Builder data side and avoid the front end entirely. I think something like this is in the works at Brand New Congress is working on this.

Open Government/Election Information (The News)

Crowd sourced news and contact info about all people in positions of power or influence. The ability to vet their record but adequate moderation to ensure the information is credible and sourceable. Contacting should be push button.

Open Voter Databases

The major parties have detailed voter information and update them regularly through great effort. Each participant updates their own voter, donation and outreach information and decides how to invest their money in coordinated efforts for candidates across the country. In return the candidates can fundraise and target you if they need to. The 2 main parties must be allowed to use this file, though they probably maintain their own. Because the marketing to voters aspect of this kind of information is so well done by other companies. This data serves mostly as a user authentication service for the voting machines.

Filmmaker’s Swarm

The ability to call on advocates to come and be a camera person for a happening. The app begins recording video and audio separately and uploading them both as soon as it starts. Click to stop recording. The media is stored to be uploaded later if they’d like. The final film is a result of uploads and the Disney AI editor to document everything from government action to protest action. They can be massively long if, cut between times and, feature a timestamp at the beginning. The AI finds video from the same location at the same time of day and tries to make sense of if the image is clear and long enough to use. Then it geo locates it and offers it as a channel. The AI then cuts together the most watched channel’s video clips together into a quick 5–10 minute montages.

Street TV

Feeds from Swarms across the country of just the video. No commentary. Not live, but edited together after the fact by AI developed by Disney or some other software. This footage need not be elevated to art, but the sudden loss of one angle to signal or jittery hands would necessitate filling in that part of the action with another angle. This kind of panopticon public tool for public use could cover evictions, protests and other disobedience in a way the mainstream can’t.
