Great observations in this article Mike. The era of ‘people who watched this show also watched these other shows’-type recommendations/discovery is gone. Part of the reason discovery also sucks is because what content we consume is influenced more and more by experiences outside of our STB and home — the websites we visit, articles we read, our Instagram, Twitter and Facebook interactions, video clips we watch on YouTube.
A recommendation system that can collect all these data points AND create a meaningful algorithm using them is what will succeed..
