Bodies that occupy the dominant culture are now very uncomfortable with the bodies they have marginalized embracing the parts of them that marked their differences and living unapologetically. Think: black women owning their natural hair and calling out the professional world for demanding whiteness; young women wearing form fitting clothes to school and calling out the institution for sexualizing their bodies and putting their male counterparts education above their own; victims of sexual assault calling out the systems that blame them for someone else’s violation of their agency; even the Pride movement simply stating that we are proud of a part of our existence that the world has been taught to shame for decades and flaunting it in the face of injustice and oppression — I could go on for hours but I think I’ve made my point.

The calling out of that dominant culture that told us we weren’t good enough and holding dominant bodies accountable for their oppressive actions.

Since the Occupy movement and the BLM movement and FeelTheBern, accountability and acknowledgment of the wrong doings of the past and present by those who benefit from oppression is a common thread and foundation of today’s social movements. We are tired of letting people and institutions get away with crushing us without consequence. And it’s about damn time.
