Journal Entry #7

1 hour and 30 minutes

In class you discussed how the youth and Alcibiades are followers of Socrates. While in class you also posed a question whether there is a difference between authority and influence. I feel that when someone is in position of authority, people listen to them out of fear of paying their consequence for refusing to command their orders, while someone who is influential in one’s life could motivate someone to do something without a fear of a consequence. I feel that Socrates is more of an influential figure than an authority figure because Socrates doesn’t have the authority to demand commands on people, but people respect him enough to listen when he speaks. In class we also listed some similarities and difference between Socrates and Alcibiades. Some similarities that they both share is that they both can be bold and defiant, anti-democratic and they both are emotionally shallow.
