New York State is trying out early voting for the first time and Nassau County residents are taking advantage of the opportunity.

The state is the 39th to allow residents to participate in early voting as 248 sites open Saturday from Long Island to the Great Lakes to the Canadian border.

The Assistant to the Chief Clerk of the Nassau County Board of Elections Katy Ryan described that there are 15 early polling sites around Nassau County, and if you’re registered to vote in Nassau County you can go to any of them.

Residents will be able to cast their vote early during a nine-day period. The first day of voting began on Oct. 26 and ended Nov. 3.

Residents are taking advantage

Albertson resident Joan Levick said she is casting her ballot early.

“Because my husband is going to work very early Tuesday and I happen to have an appointment in the city in the afternoon. So, this is our first year trying this,” Levick said.

Having conflict in their schedule due to their job seemed to be an overall theme with those early voting.

“Because I am working on election day,” Westbury resident Fred Volney said.

Some Nassau County residents such as Janet Robinson voted for this initiative.

“I voted for the initiative before. I work in the city, it just would be very helpful. And I think why not New York is a huge state like a couple of days before being able to come in and voice your vote and not feel rushed and do and just be active is what’s needed it’s the 21st century,” said Robinson.

Hopes of voter turnout increasing

It is unclear if the early voting initiative increased voter turnout.

“I don’t think we’ll be able to say until after the election just because we don’t know unfortunately sometimes off years it’s a little lower it will be an exciting thing to see,” Ryan said.

Those who were present at the Nassau County Board of Elections discussed how although we do not have the results yet, they are hopeful.

“I’m a traditionalist and I would love to vote on the Tuesday in November. But, this does make sense and it will hopefully get people out,” Levick said.

Overall, people should use their right to vote.

“I think that people have a choice and you have to express your choice,” Volney said.
