Climbing up high, Falling down low: Reflecting on my 2020
Climbing up high, Falling down low: Reflecting on my 2020

Thankfully, not crashing.

One word to describe my 2020: Rollercoaster.

Marching into 2020 with high hopes (partly influenced by the optimism of Vision 2020 coined by former Prime Minister Tun Dr. Mahathir), I thought this is going to be the best year yet — riding off the good things in 2019 and making it even better in the new year.

Then, the unexpected hit.

I woke up on Monday morning, just to receive a flood of Slack messages on my phone from my hackathon team members: “WE WON!!”, “1st place too OMG”, and “I’m SOO HAPPY!!”, which literally made my day.

48 hours ago, 5 strangers from the United States (Philadelphia and St. Louis), Canada (Montreal), and Singapore met together online, formed a team, and collaborated to build a solution to help tackle the issue of nursing homes and assisted living facilities, which have accounted for more than 42% of all COVID-19 related facilities in the United States.

Finding the Problem

The hackathon kicked off with 39…

I recently attended the ACHSM Health Congress 2019 at Gold Coast and gave a talk on how Design Prototyping can help “de-risk” healthcare innovation.

There were lots of nuggets of wisdom in and outside the room, from keynote speakers Nancy Agee (Group CEO, Carilion Clinic), Ashley Bloomfield (Director-General of Health and Chief Executive, New Zealand) to various presentations in PechaKucha and longer format and discussions over breaks and dinner.

In this article, I want to summarize my 4 key learnings over the 3 days of the Congress, and why this is such an exciting time for designers to design in…

It has been a while since I’ve been to a hackathon. I always love that hackathon as an avenue to build something quickly within the 48-hour time constraint, the opportunity to sharpen my design skills, and network with fellow hackers. So when my colleague posted on Slack about JunctionX Singapore, I signed up!

2 of my colleagues and I were lucky to be selected as part of the 120 participants out of over 190 sign-ups.

But it was off to a rocky start — one of my colleagues bailed last minute; Dheeraj joined with me but he was not feeling…

Don’t leave money on the table due to bad customers’ experience.

Mobile accounts for 34.5% of total eCommerce sales in 2017. By 2021, it should reach 54%.

The main reason why Mobile eCommerce is growing so rapidly is due to the fact that it has never been easier for customers to consume content, research products, and make purchases at their fingertips.

Taking advantage of the convenience of mobile devices, and with more technological barriers being removed, it becomes increasingly important for retailers to rethink and create a delightful shopping experience for customers on mobile. …

I remember I was wandering nervously around the warm, welcoming cafe area at the ADAX (ASEAN Data Analytics eXchange) office right after registration — trying to search for some familiar faces.

The first stranger I talked to was Choong, a software engineer at MapIt. We greeted each other and exchanged name cards. It turned out, he did not have a team yet.

Coming to a hackathon without a team, I could feel the anxiety. Most of the people were sitting in clusters at the dining table. Some even brought their computer monitors in luggage bags. Truth is, I did not…

Today is the second day Pokémon GO went live in Malaysia, and I already had tons of funs playing it. I caught quite a few Zubat bats here:

Instagram Stories: Instagram’s Snapchat Clone?

Instagram just launched Instagram Stories in its latest update. It is a new way of sharing photos and videos with your followers that disappear after 24 hours. With new text and drawing tools at your disposal, you can now share all the little moments from your day with a customised group of friends and don’t have to worry about over-posting, because drawing laser beams coming out of your cat’s eyes or placing an oversized baby bottle emoji in your hand are just some of the cool ways to explore your creativity.

When the CEO of Instagram Kevin Systrom introduced Instagram…

by using Pomodoro and the Productivity Planner

The two tools I used to keep myself to be more efficient and productive over the past week.

When I left my office around 7:30pm one day a few months back, I had a different feeling—it was one of the few rare occasions I saw the sunset. I realized something was wrong.

I am a true believer that in order to get great design work done, I need to continuously push myself and work long hours, to the extreme that there was this one time I was sleeping on the couch in school, only to wake up to a class of design juniors the next morning. …
